Corals need more than calcium and alkalinity to thrive - iron, iodine, strontium, and vitamin C all play specific roles that major-element dosing doesn't cover. Brightwell Aquatics offers a dedicated liquid supplement for each.
Choosing a Supplement
- Ferrion - a concentrated, stable liquid iron supplement for reef aquaria and refugia. Iron is a key part of the electron transport chain inside chlorophyll-containing organisms, from coral zooxanthellae to refugium macroalgae.
- Iodion - a concentrated, long-acting liquid iodine supplement. Iodine supports hermatypic corals, invertebrates, and macroalgae.
- Lugol's Solution - a concentrated iodine/potassium iodide supplement, a more traditional iodine dosing option for coral and invertebrate health compared to Iodion's long-acting formula.
- Strontion - a concentrated ionic strontium solution. Strontium makes up roughly 0.75-1.00% of the aragonite that coral skeletons are built from.
- Vitamarin-C - a highly concentrated, buffered vitamin C solution, buffered so it won't affect pH when dosed as directed.
How to Use Them
- Dose according to label directions and test where possible, rather than dosing blindly on a fixed schedule long-term.
- Choose Iodion or Lugol's based on preference - both supply iodine, with Iodion formulated for longer-acting release.
- These supplement, not replace, major-element dosing for calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium.
