Why Tanks Need Active Cooling
Powerful LED lighting, warm ambient room temperatures, and equipment heat can push water several degrees above target even with a heater turned off, and many fish and coral species are sensitive to sustained high temperatures. A cooling fan is a low-cost way to bring temperature back down through evaporative cooling across the surface.
Choosing Between the Series
- Vortex W-5 — mid-size cooling capacity for tanks between the smallest and largest fan options, without the higher airflow (and price) of the largest unit.
- Vortex W-8 — higher airflow for tanks where lighting and warm room air push temperature up significantly during summer months.
- Windy W-4 — sized for smaller tanks that don't need the airflow of a large cooling fan.
- Windy W-7 — mid-capacity cooling for larger tanks that a single small fan can't keep up with.
Setup Tips
- Top off water more frequently while running a cooling fan, since evaporative cooling increases water loss.
- Position for surface airflow rather than pointing directly down into the tank.
- Use a thermometer to confirm results and add a second fan if one isn't keeping pace with a particularly warm room.
