Between Hang-On and Sump: A Guide to the Sicce Whale Canister Filter

A hang-on-back filter isn't always enough, but a full sump feels like overkill for a smaller tank — the Sicce Whale canister line sits right in that gap. Four sizes cover nano tanks through large aquariums, each in a compact, easy-to-service canister body.

Why a Canister Between HOB and Sump

Canister filters offer more media capacity and flexibility than a hang-on-back unit, without the plumbing and cabinet space commitment of a full sump — a practical middle ground for tanks that have outgrown HOB filtration but don't need or want a sump.

Choosing a Size

  • Whale 120 — 140 GPH (10–30 gallon) — the smallest of Sicce's Whale canisters, sized for nano to small tanks.
  • Whale 200 — 190 GPH (25–50 gallon) — steps up flow and media capacity from the 120.
  • Whale 350 — 330 GPH (50–90 gallon) — sized for medium to large tanks, adding meaningfully more flow and media volume over the 200.
  • Whale 500 — 390 GPH (80–135 gallon) — the largest canister in the Whale line, built for larger tanks needing serious filtration capacity in a single compact unit.

Keeping It Running

Replacement Sponge Kits are available for the Whale 120/200 and Whale 350/500, restoring mechanical filtration once the original sponges clog — a routine maintenance item worth keeping on hand.
