Why Ceramic Sphere Media
Porous ceramic spheres pack far more surface area into a given volume than smooth or solid media, giving the bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrite to nitrate more room to colonize per unit of space in your filter.
Choosing a Format
- 4in Bio-Plate - a compact ceramic-sphere brick, not loose spheres but a fused solid plate you can drop straight into a filter compartment.
- 8in Bio-Plate - a larger brick containing a dense arrangement of small ceramic spheres, rated for up to 750 gallons.
- Bio-Sphere - packs a dense arrangement of small ceramic spheres into a sturdy 1-1/4in ball, giving beneficial bacteria a compact, loose-media format.
- Bio-Sphere Pellet - the compact-format version of IceCap's ceramic sphere media, small 3/5in pellets instead of the full-size ball.
- Bio-Sphere Media Tower - stacks up to 45 Bio-Sphere balls (1kg) on nine vertical acrylic rods, giving each sphere full water exposure.
How to Use It
- Rinse in tank water before adding to clear dust without harming the porous structure.
- Choose the Bio-Plate for a drop-in solution that doesn't shift or need containment; choose loose spheres or pellets for filling odd-shaped compartments.
- Avoid tap water rinses on established media, since chlorine and chloramine can kill the bacterial colony.
