Cryptocentrus Cinctus-Watchman Goby

The Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus) is best known for its symbiotic partnership with a pistol shrimp - the shrimp digs and maintains a shared burrow while the goby stands guard, flicking its tail to warn of danger. Peaceful and endlessly entertaining to watch, it's a reef-safe favorite even without a shrimp partner.

• Adult size: Around 3-4 in.
• Minimum tank size: 20 gal, with a sand bed and rockwork it can burrow beneath.
• Diet: Carnivore - meaty foods and sinking pellets.
• Temperament: Peaceful; pairs naturally with a pistol shrimp if one is present.
• Reef compatibility: Reef safe.

The goby-shrimp pairing is one of the most rewarding partnerships to watch in the hobby - even without a shrimp, this goby still earns its keep as an active, personable fish that rarely bothers tankmates or corals.
